There are seven building blocks known as sapt-dhatu in Ayurveda , Sapt – 7 , Dhatu – Constituent

    1. Rasa Dhatu: Plasma/lymph fluid.
    2. Rakta Dhatu: Blood.
    3. Mamsa Dhatu: Muscles.
    4. Meda Dhatu: Fat.
    5. Asthi Dhatu: Bone.
    6. Majja Dhatu: Bone marrow.
    7. Shukra Dhatu: Reproductive fluid or Semen.

These seven dhatus are made in the body after digesting the food we intake , if the food we eat is impure , unhealthy or Apathya ( something which is harmful for the body) , then these 7 dhatus become impure causing various diseases in the body.

Foods which are rich in Ojas , which kindle the digestive fire and which upon complete digestion do not leave toxic residue know as Ama are Pathya food i.e which are ideal to be consumed.

Everything in this world is made up of five elements :

    1. Prithvi (Earth)
    2. Jal ( Water)
    3. Agni ( Fire)
    4. Vayu ( Air)
    5. Akash ( Space)

According to Ayurveda , the human body is controlled by 3 major forces that are made up of above mentioned five elements , these are :

    1. Vata ( made from Vayu and Akash)
    2. Pitta ( made from Agni)
    3. Kapha ( made from Prithvi and Jal)

These 3 forces are called Doshas in Ayurveda , these work in a balanced state to keep all the body functions working , any imbalance in these 3 causes diseases.

Vata is responsible for the movements , neurological functions , all the major nerve impulses are under the conrol of Vata , even the breathing phenomenon is under the control of vayu.

Pitta controls all the body humors , such as bile , acids , biochemical reactions occur in the presence of Pitta , various enzymes and hormones in the body are controlled by Pitta.

Kapha controls the physical attributes of the body such as appearance , fat , tissues etc.

In Ayurveda our aim is to balance the three doshas to eradicate the disease.

  • origins of ayurveda

God Dhanvantarti , the vedic diety of healing and medicine.

As per Charak Samhita , when various sages got together to attend a meeting to discuss the declining health of mankind , all the sages were worried about the future of the human kind , then it was decided that one of the sages has to go and learn the knowledge of Ayurveda from the Gods , it is said that the knowledge of Ayurveda comes from the Creator Brahma to Prajapati to Ashwini kumars then Indra. Indra is the king of Devtas , then MahaRishi Bharadwaj , was appointed by the council of sages to go to heaven and learn Ayurveda from Indra himself. Its said that MahaRishi Bhardawaj was the first human to learn Ayurveda and bring this knowledge back to earth.

Ayurveda in sanskrit means Ayu+Veda , Ayu is life in sanskrit , veda is knowledge , so Ayurveda literally means the knowledge of life. For thousands of years this knowledge has been passed down through ages , eons of accumulated knowledge has been documented in various Ayurvedic texts , Major three Ayurvedic texts also known as Brihadtrayi ( the great three) are :
